WHAT IS AQIQAH?
Aqiqah is a Sunnah taught by the Prophet ﷺ that refers to the sacrifice offered on behalf of the newborn as a sign of gratitude to Allah for the blessing. It is performed on the 7th day after birth: two goats for a boy and one goat for a girl, based on authentic hadith.
Al Khaadem’s Aqiqah makes it easy for you by handling everything on your behalf – from slaughtering, cleaning, packing, cooking, and even distribution to the needy.
THE SUNNAH
ON THE SEVENTH DAY
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged several beautiful Sunnahs
to be performed on the 7th day of a child’s life:
1. Aqiqah (Sacrifice)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“For a boy, two comparable sheep should be sacrificed, and for a girl, one sheep.” – (Sunan Abu Dawud, 2834 – Sahih)
This act expresses gratitude to Allah, brings blessings upon the child, and strengthens community bonds through sharing of the meat.
The Adab of Performing Aqiqah:
In Islam, acts of worship follow two key principles:
- Rukun Zamani (Time): The time for performing the act is determined by Allah.
- Rukun Makani (Place): The place for performing the act is determined by Allah.
In the same way, Aqiqah should be performed according to the time set by the Shariah, not by personal choice. It is the right of the newborn, and the Sunnah is to perform it on the 7th day after birth.
2. Naming the Child
It is recommended to give the child a good and meaningful name.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and by your fathers’ names, so give yourselves good names.”
– (Sunan Abu Dawud, 4948 – Hasan)
He ﷺ preferred names with noble meanings, like ‘Abdullah and ‘Abdur-Rahman, and discouraged names that were overly praiseworthy, demeaning, or reflected arrogance.
Parents are encouraged to choose a name that reflects good character, servitude to Allah, and positive meaning for their child’s future.
3. Shaving the Baby’s Head
On the 7th day, it is Sunnah to shave the baby’s head.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every child is held in pledge for his ‘Aqiqah, which should be slaughtered for him on the seventh day, and he should be given a name and his head shaved.”
– (Sunan Abu Dawud, 2838 – Sahih)
After the baby’s hair is shaved, it is weighed, and donate an amount in gold or silver equal to its weight.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity.'” He said: “So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham.”
– (Sunan al-Tirmizi, 1519 – Hasan)

No. Aqiqah and Qurban are two separate acts of worship, each with its own intention. One animal cannot be used for both purposes at the same time.
However, you may perform both during the same period by offering different animals for each act.
Yes, InsyaAllah. Click here to learn more about the tahneek session.
Tahneek is Sunnah to be done as soon as possible after birth. During the time of the Prophet ﷺ, parents would bring their newborns immediately after delivery for tahneek. If tahneek cannot be done right away, it may still be performed later when possible.
